Empire Sandwich Shop

My girl Sheri let me know that the Empire Sandwich Shop on Cherokee is falling down and is going to be formally torn down tomorrow morn at 8:30am.

How long has it been since they've served a sandwich out of the wreck?

I believe they had a fire in there quite some time ago and haven't open since.

I went by there when I went home for lunch and the building is gone. Now we have a vacant lot at an intersection in a commercial district. What are people thinking? It's not like we'll ever see anything of quality get built in its place.

I actually grabbed a burger at the Empire when I worked for STLtoday and I recall being horrified at how dirty the place was. I wonder if the combination of years of filth and the fire that Pete mentions did it it. It was definitely a marvel, but perhaps beyond saving? Fortunately, we still have the White Knight downtown, which the last time I visited was clean as a whistle and serving up a damn good sandwich.

The Empire was a very small part of a large three story late-19th century building. Regardless of the faults of the Empire diner (although I found it facinating to look at) it doesn't constitute tearing down the entire building. Now there will be a large vacant lot for people to throw their trash in when they come out of Globe.

Ah, I didn't remember it being a part of a larger building (it's been too long since I was down that way). has anyone been able to turn up any photos online?

They knocked down part of the building. They left.
Called the city. They don't care. Very, very dangerous mess.
It smells too. YUK.

I noticed they haven't cleaned up any of the bricks, etc. Just knocked it down and left it. How is that supposed to be more safe than the vacant building?

There used to be a Chinese food place next door, too.

Just walked by there this morning - what a huge mess.

It's LRA property. Not sure who the demo contractor was. Condemned since 2003; the whole back of the building had been falling down for months, and the front plate glass windows busted in several times by vandals.

Just FYI.
