Name Check and sad news

We still are the world's brewery city. And not just because of the king AB, but our tradition and establishment of a variety of breweries. The Economist Magazine, a wonky world news and business analysis magazine did a story on the hops price jump. Therefore the dear beer that we love is going to rise quite noticeably in price.

Who do the Economist check in with to see how this effects the brewers in the United States? They checked in with our own O'Fallon Brewery's brewmaster Brian Owens in "Saint Louie" Missouri. The audio edition pronounces our fair city's name with a little extra limey flair.

Owens was quoted in saying about the hops that "the variety he once bought for $3 a pound (0.45kg) now costs five times that" and this means that the beloved hop rich India Pale Ale will cost much more. Egad. The big boys like their majesty AB smartly play the futures game so they come out better when it comes to such price jumps, so this is a real heavy hit to the micro breweries. I have already dropped the Butte Creek line which jumped six bucks a case.

Other key crops have seen big increases as well, such as barley for they have been planting less barley in lieu of corn. Much of this has to do with the boom in ethanol, a not so keen alternative to petroleum, for there is great inefficiency in harvesting the crop for fuel.

However, inflationary times are a coming, and this makes me sad. Especially when I try to raise a glass of delicious IPA.

Hey, I like the Economist too - I just have always thought that particular bit to be pretty damn funny.
