Running out of Gas and Correspondence

So I ran out of gas about two weeks ago on a trip back from Columbia. I took my motorcycle to interview a candidate for state rep for my video blog. I was so embarrassed about running out of gas that I didn't tell anyone for a while. But I lucked out. And my luck has been documented!

I mounted a camera to the back of my motorcycle(thanks Dilip), and the following is video of me running out of gas on Hwy 70 between Columbia and the STL. The video shows me departing Columbia and then cuts to about 5o miles east of Columbia where I run out of fuel.

Second is a copy of my post the The Royale website thanking the man Patrick who helped me out.

The third is a response from Patrick mailed to me by US Mail on Saturday.

Thank you to Patrick

Hello Patrick,

I would like to thank you. I met you last week on a stretch of Hwy 70 somewhere between here and Columbia. I was riding my motorcycle I just picked up. I was pushing it and trying not to stop. I was almost out of gas, but I was unsure of exactly when I was going to run out of gas. You see, on a new motorcycle some reserve tanks have more gas than others. And I was only at 116 miles on my tank.

But alas, I bought a gas pig of a motorbike. A Yamaha VMax. It is a fun bike, but oink oink!!

So Patrick, thank you for helping me out last Wednesday. I coasted into the rest stop, for I was out of fuel. I coasted next to an old mobile home with a trailer. I noticed a small sign on the trailer that read “Laverda Mid-Ohio.”

I felt a sense of relief. Laverda is a scooter and motorcycle brand from Italy. Patrick, thank you. I saw you at the rest stop having lunch with your daughter.

Thank you for taking your time to help me out. And I hope you had fun out in Ohio with your different hot rods at the rally. That hopped up Laverda street buggy looks crazy fun.

I heard you were in tonight for dinner. I was upstairs finishing up a few things, so dang I missed ya! Thanks for stopping down.

Thank you Patrick, I owe you one!

I love America!

don't you have a job? isn't all your goofy little side projects coming at the expense of your establishment. I'm not trying to be man, I just want to know. I am trying to get my place off the ground, and I do not have the disposable income to pay managers to watch the place while I go on jaunts

First off I would like to thank you for reading my blog on a Friday night. I wish you the best of luck in your work in opening up your place. So you are trying you get your place off the ground? It sounds like you are looking for advice.

The tone in your comment is not conducive to tavernkeeping, but I am sure you will learn as you go on. It comes across as jealous, accusatory and hateful. Usually I just ignore comments like this, but I feel you. Perhaps you are frustrated with your project and perhaps there might be a little misdirected energy.

I have learned from the best tavernkeepers in town, and you got to keep your sanity with side projects. You might find the personal side projects "goofy", and they likely are, but projects are good for you and your business. Look at the successful tavernkeepers in this town and the good ones have something else they do, whether it is antiques, practicing law, boat racing, some play softball, play music, work on their cars, others paint and some spin records on the radio.

I like to write. And I like to shoot video about things that I find interesting. I really enjoy doing this.

However, I don't typically blog about the unfun part of work and business. That is just bitching at best and boring at worst. That would be a wretched blog. It is fun for no one, the writer or the reader.

I am just lucky that my side gigs pay, but even if they didn't I would still do them. I just wish I could do more side projects like the boxing gym. I made that decision to shut the gym down in consideration of my work/my business, and the fact I did this just kills me. I will reopen the gym someday regardless of impertinent personal comments.

Another piece of advice- be close to your business. Literally. I live above mine. You can keep a close eye on your operation, but you lose privacy and there is rarely ever any real "off time."

So might I ask anonymous for your strong words have made me curious, what are you trying to open up? I love growth and new places in the STL.

Don't forget to have fun and go on jaunts, even if it is difficult $ wise or time wise. It sounds like your business is monopolizing your time and you are short on scratch, and believe me I understand. Perhaps just go on shorter "jaunts", like a daytrip to Columbia that is underwritten by a side gig. Just make sure you put gas in your tank!

Now I am off to sleep, for tomorrow I am on another one of my "jaunts" to drive a crew of neighborhood kids to Columbia and Kansas City to play in a soccer tournament and watch a pro soccer game.

Life ain't worth living unless you enjoy yourself.

peace

Steve

I thought that I was the only person that ran out of gas and had NO ONE HELP ME! :) I'm a white dude, driving a nice SUV, and I ended up walking almost 2 miles to get to a gas station!

You should consider a podcast - the flavor of your writing would make something special I believe.

Again, it's great to know that I'm not alone, and I'll be sure to remember to take something to video my plight should I be careless again. Thank you for lightening the guilt load, Steve.
